By Chris
Full disclosure: I only tested these boots out for a short time, out of water, compared side by side with the Simms Rivertek Boa boots.
I must start by saying these boots are a quality product. The stitching, fit and finish, comfort and features are excellent.
I really wanted to like these boots. They come with metal studs installed and the easy-on zipper allows them to be put on easily while balancing on one foot at the river's edge.
What turned me off them was a combination of their stiffness and weight. They are significantly heavier than the competing Simms boot, the RiverTek Boa, which I ended up buying. Further, the Orvis boot is very stiff-soled, giving them the feel of a downhill ski boot.
I'm sure some folks would appreciate the stiffness and I'm certain the weight makes less of a difference while stationary in the water than on land. Still, I decided on the Simms boot.
Make sure you like these before committing to them; try them on and take advantage of the return policy if you don't like the weight and stiffness.
Regarding sizing: buy one full size larger than your shoe size, to accommodate the neoprene bootee built into waders. I wear a size 10 shoe and a size 11 fit me well wearing the Orvis Sonic Silver chest wader.
As with all Orvis products I've tried, I'm sure these boots would offer years of reliable service and Orvis strongly backs up their products should anything go awry.
